Meet Chef George Rapitis, a Nutritionist, Author and Instructor for Healthy Eating (Eating Right).   Chef George is a a member of the American Dietetic Association and has been featured on Fox 2 Cooking School, 96.3 WDVD radio and The Detroit Free Press.

We recently had a chance to speak with Chef George regarding his passion for healthy cooking, how he got started and about his upcoming book signing event exclusively at the Sisters Art & Gifts Gallery and Gift Shop in Westland Mall (Westland, MI)!

What words best describe your books/cooking?

The type of cooking in the books is a combination of learning how to make healthy substitutions, better cooking methods, and learning how to use seasonings to make delicious meals that are nutritious.

What inspired you to become a chef and to focus on healthy cooking?
I was inspired to be a chef from a very young age because of my family heritage. My parents were both Greek and in the catering business. My mother especially felt the foodservice business was a great choice so I made sure to take as many food related classes as possible when growing up.

When did you first begin cooking (privately and professionally)?
I actually started cooking in high school at Livonia Franklin. The students ran the Patriot Inn restaurant for the faculty.

Did you take any classes or have any professional training to become a chef and nutritionist?
I have my culinary arts certification from Schoolcraft College and my dietetics degree from Madonna University both in Livonia.

What is the average price range for your books?
Average price of the books is 14.99 however they can also be purchased on Kindle and Nook.

What do you enjoy most about inventing/preparing/serving healthy dishes?
I like making healthy dishes because they are lower in calories and make me feel more energetic after eating them. I notice that I am less tired when I eat healthy.

Do you have a website, facebook page, blog or any other place on the internet that we could link to where people can view more about your food and books?
I have a facebook page which is www.facebook.com/EatRightby.George and a website www.EatRightbyGeorge.com.

Do you cater public or private events?
I do some catering but my specialty is healthy cooking workshops with different groups of people. I recently did a healthy cooking workshop with a group of young kids and they enjoyed the fruit smoothies we made together.

Of all of the dishes you have created, which one is your favorite?
I really enjoy making different variations’ of stuffed grapeleaves. They can be prepared vegetarian and with meat. I have used chicken, turkey and lamb. I get the grapleaves from my garden as well as the mint and dill in them.
